Born and raised in Cairo, Georgia, Amy grew up surrounded by the history of her family and the other early settlers to south Georgia. She graduated from both Oxford College and Emory College of Emory University with Phi Beta Kappa distinction. She then received her J.D. from the University of Georgia School of Law.
Amy practiced as an Assistant District Attorney in the Middle Judicial Circuit, the Dougherty Judicial Circuit and, finally, the Cordele Judicial Circuit, prosecuting both child support and criminal matters. She also spent several years as Special Assistant Attorney General for the Cordele Judicial Circuit Child Support Services office. She currently enjoys the variety of topics encountered in government law.
Amy has been actively involved with both Cub Scout Pack 270 and Boy Scout Troop 270, currently serving as a Committee Member for Troop 270 and previously as a Den Leader and Advancement Chairperson for Pack 270. She currently serves as a Board Member for PG Retreat, an international community for families with profoundly gifted children. In 2015 she was tapped to serve as Programming Chair for that group’s annual four-day family conference.
Amy is married to Dr. Chet Lapeza, a Cordele native and a member of the local medical community. His family has lived in the Crisp/Dooly area for over 175 years and that connection to “home” is what drew them to return to Cordele in 1999. Together they have two children and enjoy spending time supporting their many school-related activities and following whatever “nerdy” interest the family may have at the time.
